BCPG Urges Lagos Government for Compulsory Subsoil Tests to Prevent Collapses

The Building Collapse Prevention Guild (BCPG) has called on the Lagos State Government to mandate subsoil tests in coastal areas to prevent building collapses. The BCPG emphasized the importance of comprehensive geotechnical studies to determine soil strength and ensure suitable foundations for structures in coastal communities.

The guild highlighted the risk of structural failures due to inadequate soil testing, particularly in the Island Local Council Development Area bordered by the Five Cowrie Creek and the Atlantic Ocean. BCPG expressed concerns over weak regulatory oversight in Lagos leading to poor soil testing practices, increasing the vulnerability of buildings in coastal zones.

The call for compulsory subsoil investigations aims to enhance building safety and prevent future disasters.
