Benfica Defends Prestianni Amid Racism Allegations

Benfica has issued a robust response to allegations of racism involving their winger Gianluca Prestianni during a UEFA Champions League match against Real Madrid at Estadio da Luz. The incident occurred on a Tuesday night when Vinicius Jr reported experiencing racial abuse, leading to a 10-minute suspension of the match in the second half.

Vinicius briefly left the pitch but returned to play. Following the incident, UEFA opened disciplinary proceedings, with potential consequences for any player found guilty of racist conduct, including a minimum 10-match ban in European competitions.

Benfica released a statement defending the 18-year-old Prestianni, sharing video footage of the alleged incident. Benfica's manager, Jose Mourinho, who previously managed Real Madrid from 2010 to 2013, commented on receiving different versions of the events.

He suggested that Vinicius may have disrespected the club with his goal celebration. Sanjai Bhandari, chair of the anti-discrimination campaign Kick It Out, criticized Mourinho's comments, emphasizing the need for a strong anti-racism protocol.
