Edo Governor Okpebholo Advocates for Benin Bronzes Return

On Wednesday, Senator Mondai Okpebholo, the Governor of Edo State, emphasized the significance of the Benin bronzes as part of the spiritual and cultural heritage of the Benin Kingdom. He stated that these artifacts rightfully belong to the Oba of Benin's palace and should not be subjected to political controversy.

During a reception in Benin City for a delegation from the National Commission for Museums and Monuments (NCMM), led by Director General Mr. Olugbil Hollowai, alongside Consul General of Switzerland in Lagos, Ms.

Conni Camenzind, Okpebholo highlighted the importance of returning the bronzes, which were reportedly taken in 1897 during a British punitive expedition. He commended the Swiss government's involvement in the restitution process, noting that the bronzes transcend artistic value and represent the identity and spiritual essence of the Benin people.

Okpebholo expressed optimism about the ongoing restitution efforts worldwide and thanked the Swiss authorities for their initiative in returning the artifacts.
