Benin, Togo, Niger owe Nigeria $11.16 million in bills

As of the end of 2025, Benin, Togo, and Niger collectively owed Nigeria $11.16 million in electricity bills, as reported by the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) in its 2025 annual report. The debts are attributed to three international customers: Societe Beninoise d’Energie Electrique (SBEE) from Benin, Compagnie Energie Electrique du Togo (CEET) from Togo, and Societe Nigerienne d’electricite (NIGELEC) from Niger.

These customers achieved an 84.90% remittance performance, indicating that while they paid a significant portion of their bills, they did not settle the entire amount owed. This situation underscores ongoing collection challenges within Nigeria's electricity market, despite the supply of electricity under bilateral agreements.

The report also noted improvements in payment patterns compared to 2024. Collection efficiency is crucial for the financial sustainability of the electricity sector, especially as distribution companies face revenue and liquidity pressures.

In February 2026, electricity distribution companies generated N196 billion in revenue, and in October 2025, the Federal Government allocated N28 billion for electricity distribution companies under the Meter Acquisition Fund Tranche B scheme.
