Benue APC Feud Threatens House Leadership Shake-Up

The political crisis within the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Benue State is intensifying, potentially affecting the leadership of the House of Representatives. Philip Agbes, a representative from Ado/Ogbadibo/Okokwu Federal Constituency, is expected to defect to the Labour Party, creating a vacancy for the deputy spokesperson role in the House.

This situation is linked to the prolonged feud between Governor Hyacinth Alia and former governor George Akum, which has escalated since the 2023 general elections. Alia's administration has faced challenges in unifying the party, with accusations against Akum of undermining the governor's authority.

Vice President Kashim Shettima has warned that unresolved disputes could have serious consequences for the region ahead of the 2027 elections. Agbes' departure from the APC is anticipated to occur formally after the House resumes from its Sallah break on March 31, 2026, requiring the appointment of a new deputy spokesperson.
