Benue APC Divided as Alia and Akume Clash Over Congresses

The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Benue State has divided into two factions due to a clash between Governor Hyacinth Alia and George Akume regarding the conduct of ward congresses. This division has led to the announcement of different sets of ward executives across the state's 23 local government areas, deepening internal conflicts within the party and raising fears about its readiness for the 2027 general elections.

The faction aligned with Alia, represented by Austin Agada, claims legitimacy in their congress process, while Akume's faction, led by Jame Ornguga, disputes this, asserting that the party's rules do not allow for executives to continue without fresh elections. Tensions escalated following disagreements over appointments within the governor's administration, leading to the suspension of 13 lawmakers linked to Akume's camp.

Despite court rulings favoring Akume's faction regarding access to the party secretariat, the situation remains unresolved, with both factions conducting separate congresses. Political analysts warn that this division could weaken the party's mobilization efforts for future elections.
