Alia-Akume Rift Endangers Benue Lawmakers' Re-Election

A political rift between Benue State Governor Hyacinth Alia and Senator George Akume is jeopardizing the re-election prospects of the state's federal lawmakers. The conflict has emerged as a significant issue ahead of the 2027 general elections, with 14 federal lawmakers, including three senators and 11 House of Representatives members, facing an uncertain path back to the National Assembly.

The APC, which currently holds 10 House seats and two Senate positions, is experiencing internal divisions that have deepened the political crisis. Notably, Philip Agbes, the deputy spokesperson of the House, recently defected to the Labour Party, reflecting the fallout from the ongoing power struggle.

Despite assurances from Alia that the APC ticket would remain intact, doubts persist regarding the party's unity. The situation has led to a series of failed attempts to broker peace, with significant figures like Nuhu Ribadu and Tajudeen Abba involved in mediation efforts that have not succeeded.
