Benue State Confirms No Monkeypox Outbreak in Korinya

On Monday, the Benue State Government announced that a suspected outbreak of Monkeypox (Mpox) in Korinya community, Konshisha Local Government Area, was ruled out. State Commissioner for Health and Human Services, Dr.

Paul Ogwuche, stated that investigations indicated the reported cases were clinically consistent with Chickenpox (Varicella). The ministry received reports on July 25 and activated an emergency response, deploying disease surveillance officers and the State Epidemiologist to verify the claims.

The investigation identified two adult residents who had developed fever and skin rashes but were already recovering after seeking treatment at a private health facility. Clinical assessments showed the illness followed the typical course of Chickenpox, with no lesions on the palms, soles, or mouth, which are key features of Mpox.

The investigation team reviewed photographs of the skin lesions, further supporting the conclusion. Surveillance in Korinya and neighboring communities has been intensified to detect any emerging public health threats.
