Senate Urges Military Base in Kwande Amid Rising Attacks

The Nigerian Senate has called on the Federal Government to establish a military base in Kwande, Benue State, in response to escalating attacks that have led to the displacement of residents and significant loss of life. Senator Emmanuel Udende sponsored the motion, highlighting that coordinated attacks by armed assailants have resulted in the deaths of at least 20 people, with many others injured and properties destroyed.

A particularly deadly attack occurred on February 5, 2026, where gunmen stormed a settlement, killing several residents and leaving 50 people reported dead during a subsequent attack in February. The Senate noted that violence has continued, with 11 people killed in a fresh attack on March 10.

The lawmakers emphasized the need for improved security measures, including increased surveillance and coordination of patrol operations. They also urged telecommunications companies to install communication masts to aid distress calls during emergencies.
