Benue Governor Plans IDP Camp Closures as Security Improves

Benue State Governor Rev. Fr. Hyacinth Alia announced during a media interaction with the Renewed Hope Ambassadors Presidential Media Team, led by Bayo Onanuga, that his administration is considering closing some Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camps due to improvements in the security situation. Alia noted that federal government interventions and enhanced security measures have allowed some displaced residents to return voluntarily to their communities and resume farming.

He mentioned that 15 IDP camps were established following violent attacks that displaced residents. The governor emphasized the importance of creating adequate conditions for a safe and permanent return, rather than merely relocating people back to insecure areas.

Alia expressed optimism that ongoing security efforts would enable returnees to rebuild their livelihoods and strengthen the agricultural sector in Benue. The state government is partnering with international organizations, including the United Nations and the International Organisation for Migration, to address the displacement crisis effectively.
