Vigilantes Kill NYSC Member Over Motorcycle Theft Allegations

In Buruku Local Government Area, Benue State, a National Youth Service Corps member named Ben Agir was killed by local vigilantes over allegations of motorcycle theft. The incident took place at Anibro Settlement during a night patrol on Sunday, between 11 PM and midnight.

According to Raymond Aondoakura, the chairman of Buruku LGA, the vigilantes apprehended Agir on suspicion of being involved in motorcycle theft. They reportedly began to beat him, claiming he was not truthful about his identity.

Agir was left in a coma and later taken to the hospital, where he was confirmed dead. Following the incident, the local council suspended the activities of the vigilante group pending the implementation of proper regulatory measures.

Efforts to reach police spokesperson DSP Udem Edet for comments were unsuccessful, and Veronica Ogwuch, a spokesperson for the National Youth Service Corps in the state, indicated that there was confusion regarding Agir's service status, suggesting he may not have been serving in Benue State.
