Nigeria Announces Para Team for 2026 Commonwealth Fencing

The Fencing Federation has unveiled a 12-member para squad to represent Nigeria at the 2026 Commonwealth Fencing Championships, scheduled for August 9 to 14 at Rugby School Nigeria, Atlantic City, Victoria Island. The team consists of six men: Oduneye Opeoluwa, Adibe Bright, Owolabi Daniel, Ajani Idowu, Adeniji Michael, and Owoyele Damilola, and six women: Obilor Chidinma, Rahamon Abiola, Iorguna Joy, Ezeamwafor Esther, Otun Joyce, and Kumuyi Itunu, all making their tournament debut.

This championship is significant as it is the first time the event will be held in Nigeria and the first senior fencing tournament hosted in Africa. In preparation, the World Abilitysport, in collaboration with the Commonwealth Fencing Federation and the Nigeria Fencing Federation, will conduct the 2026 Wheelchair Fencing Academy (ENABLE Academy) in Lagos from August 5 to 7, focusing on training and coaching techniques.

Harry Cootes, Acting CEO of World Abilitysport, emphasized the importance of inclusivity in fencing and the Academy's role in fostering international connections and competition.
