Edo Police Foil Bigamy Attempt, Arrest Suspect

On March 14, 2026, the Edo State Police Command intervened to prevent Mr. Ajayi Patrick from contracting a second marriage, allegedly committing bigamy.

The incident was reported after a complaint was received on March 12, prompting the deployment of CSP Adesuwa Omoruyi and her team to the marriage registry in Benin City. They sought documentary evidence, including a marriage certificate, to substantiate the allegations.

Mr. Ajayi was granted bail under standard procedures, with Mr.

Enabulel Sampson, 64, acting as surety. However, the surety failed to honor the bail conditions, leading to Mr.

Ajayi's arrest. He has since fled to Canada to evade investigation, prompting the police to contact Interpol for assistance in tracking him down.

The police have faced accusations from a group called Freedom Ambassador for allegedly aiding Mr. Ajayi's escape, but they maintain that their actions are in line with legal standards, emphasizing that bigamy is a bailable offense.
