Violence Escalates Ahead of Osun Governorship Election

The upcoming governorship election in Osun State on August 15, 2025, is overshadowed by increasing violence and unrest. This turmoil has intensified since the local government elections held on February 15, 2025, where the All Progressives Congress (APC) faced off against the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Following the defeat of Governor Adegboyega Oyetola in the July 16, 2022, governorship election, Ademola Adeleke was sworn in, leading to a contentious political environment. The APC's local government chairmen, despite a court ruling, attempted to reclaim their positions, resulting in violent clashes with PDP loyalists.

Reports indicate that six individuals, including APC chairman Remi Abba, were killed amid these confrontations. The violence has been exacerbated by the involvement of political thugs and cult groups, raising concerns about the effectiveness of security agencies in maintaining order as the election approaches.
