Borno State Admits Error in N4bn Rail Project Budget

The Borno State Government acknowledged an administrative error concerning the inclusion of a N4 billion rail project in its 2025 budget implementation report. This clarification followed concerns raised by civic organization Tracka, which reported on June 15 that the state claimed to have spent N2 billion on rail construction in Maiduguri Metropolitan Council and Jere Local Government Area.

However, a field visit conducted in May 2026 found no evidence of recent rail construction or rehabilitation work in the area. The government stated that no rail project was awarded, funded, or executed during the 2025 fiscal year, and emphasized that the inclusion of the project in the budget report did not reflect the true status of the matter.

The government committed to transparency and proper management of public resources, stating that necessary steps would be taken to correct the records and prevent future occurrences.
