Nigeria Ranks 4th in Global Terrorism Index Amid Attacks

According to the 2026 Global Terrorism Index report published by the Institute for Economics and Peace, Nigeria has experienced a 46% increase in terrorism-related fatalities in 2025, despite a global decline in such deaths. The report highlights that Nigeria ranks fourth globally in terrorism impact, with Borno State being particularly affected, recording two of the twenty deadliest attacks in the country.

Although no group officially claimed responsibility for these attacks, local media attributed them to the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) and a faction of Boko Haram. The report emphasizes the concentration of terrorist activities in Nigeria and warns of the need for stronger counter-terrorism measures to address the worsening insecurity.

It also notes that while there has been a global improvement in terrorism trends, the situation in Nigeria underscores the urgent need for sustained international collaboration to combat terrorism effectively.
