African Union Condemns Maiduguri Bombing, Urges Support

The African Union (AU) has strongly condemned a suicide bombing that occurred on March 16, 2026, in Maiduguri, Borno State, Nigeria, resulting in at least 23 deaths and injuring 150 others. In a statement released on Wednesday, AU Chairperson Mahmoud Youssouf expressed condolences to the victims' families and emphasized the AU's solidarity with the Nigerian government and people during this challenging time.

The AU reiterated its firm stance against terrorism and called for stronger global collaboration to support Nigeria, particularly in humanitarian assistance and security cooperation within the Lake Chad Basin. Youssouf acknowledged the efforts of Nigerian authorities in addressing insecurity and commended the leadership of the federal government and Borno State for their collective efforts to counter terrorism.

However, he warned that the recent attack highlights the ongoing threat posed by terrorist groups and stressed the necessity for a unified response from the state and society to effectively combat terrorism and ensure peace and security.
