Atiku Abubakar Wins ADC Presidential Ticket for 2027

Atiku Abubakar emerged as the presidential candidate for the African Democratic Congress (ADC) for the 2027 general election after defeating former Minister of Transport Rotimi Amaechi and former banker Moham Hayatu-Deen in the party's presidential primaries. The results, announced on Wednesday night, revealed that Atiku received a total of 1,855,787 votes, significantly surpassing Amaechi's 509,397 votes and Hayatu-Deen's 180,903 votes.

The total votes cast in the election amounted to 2,546,457, with a total party membership of 3,113,599. The primaries commenced on Monday, May 25, 2026, with party members across 36 states participating in the direct primary system adopted by the ADC leadership.

Despite pressure for a consensus arrangement to avoid internal divisions, the three major aspirants declined to step down, leading to a full-scale primary election. Atiku's victory is expected to reshape the political landscape ahead of the 2027 presidential election.
