Nigerian Government Implements 40% Allowance Increase for ASUU Members

The Federal Government of Nigeria has started implementing a new agreement with the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), approving a 40% increase in academic staff allowances, effective January 1, 2026. This move, in line with President Bola Tinubu's commitment, aims to honor agreements in the education sector and promote harmony in public universities.

The Ministry of Education, through Dr. Tunji Alausa, confirmed the implementation, with federal universities already reflecting the approved salary increases.

The agreement, following renegotiations that began in 2017, focuses on improving conditions, funding, autonomy, and academic freedom in Nigerian universities. Key provisions include a restructuring of academic allowances, a new salary structure, and the approval of a new professorial cadre.

The agreement also emphasizes performance-based payments, transparency, and measures to curb brain drain in the academic sector.
