Nigerian Government Approves 40% Academic Allowance Increase for ASUU Members

The Federal Government of Nigeria has commenced the implementation of key welfare provisions agreed upon in the newly renegotiated 2025 agreement with the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), which includes a 40% increase in academic allowances for lecturers in federal universities. The Ministry of Education, in an official statement on Monday, directed vice-chancellors of federal universities to address the latest developments following the signing of the revised agreement on January 14, 2026.

The pact was concluded after months of negotiations to avert further strikes and enhance conditions in the country's public tertiary institutions. The State Ministry in Alausa confirmed that federal universities have already started adjusting salaries to reflect the allowance increase, with other institutions expected to follow suit.

The Ministry emphasized the mandatory implementation of the consolidated academic allowance as a non-taxable benefit, already captured in the 2026 federal budget. This move aligns with President Bola Tinubu's agenda to address long-standing grievances within the university system and improve academic productivity nationwide.
