FG Files Treason Charges Against Alleged Coup Plotters

The Federal Government of Nigeria has filed 13 treason charges against several individuals, including a retired Major General and a retired Naval Captain, accused of plotting to overthrow President Bola Tinubu's administration. The case is being heard in the Federal High Court in Abuja.

The charges, which include serious offenses such as treason and terrorism, carry heavy penalties, including life imprisonment. Reports suggest that security agencies were already tracking the possible plot, leading to the quiet arrest of at least 16 military officers across various locations. The Defence Headquarters confirmed the existence of a scheme to unseat the current administration, and families of detained suspects have publicly appealed for access to their loved ones and a speedy trial.
