FG Begins Trial of 500 Terrorism Suspects in Abuja

On Tuesday, the Federal Government of Nigeria began the trial of 500 terrorism suspects at the Federal High Court in Abuja, accused of involvement in serious deadly attacks across northern Nigeria. The suspects are linked to claims of over 2,000 deaths and widespread property destruction in the region.

They face charges for direct participation in attacks and for allegedly supporting terrorist groups through financial assistance and logistics. The prosecution team is led by Attorney General Lateef Fagbemi and Director of Public Prosecutions Rotimi Oyedepo.

Initially, 227 suspects were set to be tried. The court proceedings are being observed by various professional bodies, including Amnesty International and the Nigerian Bar Association, to ensure transparency and adherence to due process.

Security measures are heightened around the court premises, with heavy guard personnel. Notably, Justice Binta Fatima Nyako has previously convicted individuals for aiding Boko Haram insurgents, with sentences ranging from 7 to 20 years.

The trial is expected to continue until April 8, 2026.
