FG Prosecutes 500 Terrorists in Phase 9 Mass Trial

The Federal Government of Nigeria is currently prosecuting 500 suspected terrorists as part of Phase 9 of a mass trial, as announced by Attorney General of the Federation, Lateef Fagbemi, SAN. The trial began on Tuesday and is set to conclude by Saturday, with 227 suspects brought to court on the first day.

This mass trial is taking place in Abuja, although logistical reasons have necessitated the move from Kainji, Niger State. Fagbemi emphasized the importance of prioritizing the trial over the Easter holiday, noting that judges typically do not sit during this period.

The trial is being conducted transparently, with the involvement of various stakeholders, including the Nigerian Bar Association and the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime. Notably, some suspects have admitted to committing crimes, and the trial aims to ensure due process is followed, with no one convicted unless the legal provisions are satisfied.

The trial is significant in addressing the ongoing security challenges posed by groups like Boko Haram and ISWAP.
