Simon Lalong Backs Tinubu for Second Term, Cites Reforms

Former Governor Simon Lalong has publicly endorsed President Bola Tinubu for a second term, emphasizing the need for continuity in the economic reforms introduced since Tinubu took office in 2023. Speaking at a national forum of former presiding officers of state houses of assembly, Lalong argued that Tinubu has taken on difficult structural issues that previous administrations avoided, asserting that the country requires ongoing efforts to consolidate the progress made.

He specifically defended Tinubu's removal of the petrol subsidy, labeling it "one of the most difficult and consequential economic decisions" in recent years. Lalong noted that past administrations had shied away from addressing the subsidy due to its negative impact on public finances, which had fostered a consumption pattern without adequate investment in the economy.

He urged former legislative leaders to advocate for the reform agenda within their communities, stressing the importance of public understanding for its success. Lalong expressed confidence that voters would recognize Tinubu's efforts in the upcoming elections.
