Protests Erupt in Oyo Over Mass Abduction of Students

A fresh round of protests occurred in Ibadan, Oyo State, led by the National Union of Teachers (NUT) in response to the mass abduction of 40 students and teachers by armed kidnappers on May 15. Protesters gathered along Busi Iwo Road, chanting solidarity songs and holding placards demanding the return of the abducted individuals.

The incident took place in the Esiel Oriir Local Government Area, where heavily armed kidnappers invaded and captured the victims, with footage showing them being punished deep within a forest during their week-long captivity. The protests followed earlier demonstrations concerning the alarming rate of kidnappings in the region, with teachers and students taking to the streets to demand action from relevant authorities to ensure the safe return of their colleagues and to address the growing insecurity affecting educational institutions.
