Osun Speaker and 24 Lawmakers Defect to Accord Party

On Friday, the Speaker of the Osun State House, Adewale Egbedun, led a significant political shift as he and 24 lawmakers officially defected from the People's Democratic Party (PDP) to the Accord Party. This move occurred during a closed-door meeting held within the assembly complex in Osogbo.

The decision was influenced by discussions among lawmakers and was reportedly aimed at aligning politically with Governor Ademola Adeleke, who had previously left the PDP for the Accord Party in anticipation of the 2026 re-election. Sources indicated that the discussions about leaving the PDP began shortly after the governor's party change in November.

The final decision was reached following recent developments concerning the national election timetable and internal party disagreements. The lawmakers expressed a belief that their political unity would be strengthened in the Accord Party.

Olamid Tiamiyu, the spokesperson for the Speaker, later confirmed the development. Security measures around the assembly complex were reportedly tightened in response to the defection.
