U.S. Deploys Drones and Troops to Support Nigeria

The United States has deployed multiple MQ-9 Reaper drones and 200 troops to Nigeria to assist in the fight against insurgency in the northern region. According to U.S. defense officials, this mission is strictly focused on surveillance and advisory support, with no American personnel embedded in frontline units.

The deployment was reportedly requested by Nigerian authorities to help identify and respond to terrorist threats in the region. The U.S. forces are currently operating from an airfield in Bauchi, Nigeria, supporting the establishment of a new intelligence fusion cell.

The operation is part of a broader effort to strengthen counterterrorism operations in Nigeria, which has seen escalating violence from extremist groups such as Boko Haram and the Islamic State West Africa Province. The U.S. military's role remains strictly non-combat, aimed at enhancing Nigeria's capacity to address insurgent threats.
