Tinubu Approves Up to 80% Salary Increase for Military

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved a substantial salary increase for personnel of the Nigerian Armed Forces, with adjustments ranging from 30% to 80%. This new salary structure, which will benefit approximately 250,000 military personnel, is set to take effect on September 1, 2026.

The announcement was made by Mr. Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy.

Officers above the rank of Colonel will receive a 30% salary increase, while personnel from Colonel down to Warrant Officer will see a 50% increase. The most significant adjustment is for junior personnel, with soldiers from Private to Staff Sergeant receiving an 80% increase.

The revised salary package will raise the Federal Government’s annual wage bill for the armed forces from N660 billion to approximately N924 billion. This increase reflects the government's commitment to improving military personnel welfare and operational effectiveness in combating insecurity, including terrorism and banditry.

President Tinubu emphasized the importance of supporting the armed forces in their duties to safeguard the nation.
