Nigerian Government Implements Tax-Free Allowances for University Lecturers

The Nigerian Ministry of Education, under Tunji Alausa, has directed federal universities to commence tax-free payments of academic tool allowances to lecturers nationwide, fulfilling agreements with the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU). This initiative, part of the 2025 agreement between the Federal Government and ASUU, exempts certain academic staff from income tax, benefiting from a 40% review in academic compensation.

The tax-exempt allowances cover activities related to academic tools and range from over 1 million to 3 million annually, benefiting various academic staff categories. The move is designed to promote industrial harmony, enhance academic performance, and strengthen the academic environment in universities.
