In a letter dated July 6, 2026, United States President Donald Trump commended Nigerian President Bola Tinubu for his strong leadership in addressing terrorism and insecurity in Nigeria, especially concerning attacks on Christian communities. The letter was made public on Wednesday through a statement by Tinubu's Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga.

Trump expressed appreciation for Tinubu's commitment to improving security and reaffirmed the U.S. readiness to support Nigeria's efforts against terrorism. He emphasized the importance of the U.S.-Nigeria relationship, particularly in light of spreading security threats in West Africa, and referenced the US-Nigeria 2026 Defence Cooperation Roadmap as a framework for bilateral security collaboration.

Trump also announced the deployment of U.S. Special Operations Forces to assist Nigeria's military with advanced training, intelligence sharing, and operational support aimed at enhancing the capabilities of the Armed Forces of Nigeria to protect civilians and dismantle terrorist networks.
