Broadcast Professionals Advocate for Ethical AI Use

On Tuesday, stakeholders in Nigeria's broadcasting industry convened for the maiden Ambassador Segun Olusola Annual Lecture at the Afe Babalola Auditorium, University of Lagos, as a pre-event for the 7th Nigerian Broadcasters Merit Awards. The lecture, themed “Passing the Mic: Bridging Generations, Restoring Professionalism and Securing the Future of Broadcasting,” was hosted by Prof Sunday Oloruntola, Dean of the Faculty of Communication and Media Studies, with Prof Folasade Ogunsola, Vice-Chancellor of UNILAG, serving as chief host.

Broadcast journalist Zdon Paporella moderated the event, honoring Amb Olusola's legacy as a pioneer in broadcasting and humanitarian service. Ms Agatha Amata, CEO of the Nigerian Broadcasters Merit Awards, stated the lecture aims to preserve Olusola’s legacy while fostering discussions on the future of broadcasting.

Dr Victor Ogwueze, representing a keynote speaker, urged broadcasters to responsibly embrace innovation, warning against the threats posed by artificial intelligence and misinformation. The event underscored the necessity for mentorship and ethical standards in the evolving media landscape.
