Wike Orders Investigation into Abuja Building Collapse

Nyesom Wike, the Governor of Rivers State, ordered an investigation into a building collapse in Abuja, sealing off the affected premises. He described the incident as tragic and stressed that the government would not compromise on the safety of residents.

Wike directed the Federal Capital Development Authority (FCDA) to carry out a preliminary investigation pending the outcome of a panel's findings. He warned developers against obstructing officials and highlighted the need for strict compliance with building standards, including soil tests and quality materials, to prevent future disasters.

Bashir Madaki Sanusi, Director of the Department of Development Control, revealed that independent integrity tests identified critical underground anomalies at the site, which were previously hidden from the development team. Sanusi emphasized that regular soil tests had been conducted, showing no initial negative tendencies.

The preliminary investigation concluded that an independent panel would scrutinize the structural design and soil tests to determine ultimate liability for the fatal collapse.
