Buratai Urges Action Against Terrorism Financing in Nigeria

In a recent television interview, Tukur Buratai, the former Chief of Army Staff of Nigeria, discussed the critical issue of terrorism financing in the country. He urged the federal government to take decisive action against individuals and entities financing terrorism, which he did not publicly name for undisclosed reasons.

Buratai stressed that merely identifying these financiers is inadequate to address Nigeria's security challenges, advocating for a comprehensive approach beyond military action. He pointed out that the Nigerian Army's role is limited to intelligence gathering and that the responsibility for legal action lies with the federal government.

Buratai referenced the Terror Prevention Prohibition Act of 2022, which empowers the government to identify and sanction terror financiers. He noted that the federal government had previously identified 15 entities, including nine individuals and six Bureau de Change operators, linked to terrorism financing, with actions expected to be taken by early 2024.
