Burkina Faso Dissolves All Political Parties Under Military-Led Government

Burkina Faso's military-led government, under the leadership of junta leader Captain Ibrahim Traoré, has dissolved all political parties across the country. The decision to dissolve political parties was announced after a Council of Ministers meeting, with the aim of redefining the political and governance system to promote national unity.

The move is part of ongoing efforts to refound the state and strengthen government coherence. The decree passed by the Council stipulates that the assets of dissolved political parties will be handed over to the state.

This decision comes after the 2022 military coup in Burkina Faso, where over 100 registered political parties existed, with 15 holding seats in the National Assembly. The junta has also adopted a new national development roadmap worth 36 trillion CFA francs (approximately $65 billion) to guide state rebuilding efforts amidst security and economic challenges facing the West African country.
