Burkina Faso Military Government Dissolves Political Parties, Seizes Assets Amid Rebuilding Efforts

Burkina Faso's military government, led by Interior Minister Emil Zerbo, has dissolved all political parties and scrapped the legal framework regulating their operations. The decision, approved by the Nation's Council of Ministers, aims to consolidate control in the country following a September 2022 coup.

The government's review highlighted the proliferation of political parties as fostering division and weakening social cohesion. Prior to the coup, Burkina Faso had over 100 registered political parties, with 15 represented in parliament after the 2020 general elections.

The decree formalizes the disbandment of political parties and mandates the transfer of their assets to the state. Burkina Faso, along with its neighbors Mali and Niger, continues to face challenges from Islamist insurgencies linked to groups like Al-Qaeda and ISIS, resulting in casualties and displacements over the past decade.
