ASF France Demands Accountability for CAC Data Breach

ASF France, represented by Country Director Angela Uwandu Uzoma Iwuchukwu, has raised alarms over a recent data breach involving Nigeria's Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC). The breach allegedly involved a threat actor identified as Bytetobreach, compromising sensitive data, including handwritten signatures and passport photographs.

Iwuchukwu described the incident as a grave violation of constitutional privacy rights and the Nigeria Data Protection Act (NDPA). ASF France criticized the CAC for its inadequate public communication and failure to disclose the number of affected individuals, leaving millions of business owners uncertain about the breach's implications.

The organization emphasized that the CAC's response fell short of legal requirements, particularly regarding victim notification in high-risk cases. They urged the need for a shift towards proactive measures, including independent forensic audits and stronger regulatory enforcement.

ASF France proposed significant reforms to enhance data protection in Nigeria, highlighting the absence of mechanisms for victims to seek compensation for compromised data.
