CAF President Calls for Unity Amid AFCON Final Controversy

Patrice Motsepe, the President of the Confederation of African Football (CAF), made a crucial appeal for unity and transparency during a meeting in Dakar, Senegal, which included Senegalese President Bassir Diomay Fay. This appeal comes amidst ongoing tensions related to the controversial 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) final, which involved Senegal and Morocco.

The controversy began when Senegal was stripped of the 2025 AFCON title, which was later awarded to Morocco following a chaotic final on January 18 in Rabat, where Senegal initially won 1-0 but briefly walked off the pitch in protest against a late refereeing decision. Motsepe supported an investigation into allegations of corruption within CAF and stressed the importance of enforcing strong rules to protect the integrity of African football.

He declined to comment on the specifics of the Senegal-Morocco dispute, which is currently under review by the Court of Arbitration for Sport. Motsepe insisted that no country receives preferential treatment during the appeal process and expects continued diplomatic efforts to resolve the crisis.
