Motsepe in Dakar Amid AFCON Title Controversy

Patrice Motsepe, the President of CAF, arrived in Dakar on April 8, 2023, following significant backlash over the decision to strip Senegal of their AFCON title. This decision, made on March 17, 2023, overturned Senegal's 1-0 victory against Morocco in the final held on January 18, 2023.

The controversy stemmed from a penalty awarded to Morocco, which Senegalese players, including head coach Pape Thiaw and staff, protested by walking off the pitch. The Senegalese Football Federation has lodged an appeal with the Court of Arbitration for Sport to overturn this ruling.

Additionally, the Senegalese government has reacted strongly, calling for an international probe into alleged corruption within African football governance. Motsepe's visit aims to address these disputes and emphasize the need for unity and cooperation within CAF.
