CAF Postpones 2026 WAFCON, Explores New Hosts

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) announced on Thursday that the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) will be postponed from its original dates of March 17 to April 3, with new dates set for July 25 to August 16. This decision comes as uncertainties regarding Morocco's capability to host the tournament have surfaced, prompting CAF to quietly explore alternative venues.

Reports indicate that Moroccan authorities had alerted CAF a week prior about potential scheduling conflicts and logistical constraints. The relationship between CAF President Patrice Motsepe and Moroccan football chief Fouzi Lekjaa has reportedly been strained due to these negotiations.

In response to Morocco's potential withdrawal, South Africa's Minister of Sport, Arts and Culture, Gayton McKenzie, has declared the country's readiness to host the tournament, cautioning that delays could hinder the progress of women's football in Africa. The tournament will also serve as a qualifier for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup, with four semi-finalists qualifying automatically.
