Canada Sets Conditions for International Student Work

The Canadian government has released guidelines outlining seven specific conditions that international students on study permits must fulfill to work off-campus without needing a separate work permit. The conditions include being a full-time student at a designated learning institution, having commenced their study program, being enrolled in a qualifying academic or vocational program, holding a valid study permit or having applied for an extension before expiration, ensuring their study program lasts at least six months and leads to a degree, diploma, or certificate, having conditions on their study permit that allow off-campus work, and possessing a social insurance number (SIN).

All seven conditions must be met simultaneously; partial compliance is insufficient. Students who work off-campus without confirming their eligibility risk violating their study permit terms.

The reference to the SIN is particularly relevant for Nigerian and other African students in Canada, as it is necessary for employment, tax filing, and accessing government programs.
