Canada Outlines Work Permit Rules for International Students

Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada has published five specific situations in which international students are prohibited from working off-campus without a work permit. Firstly, if a student's study permit explicitly states they are not authorized to work off-campus, they cannot do so.

Secondly, students enrolled solely in English or French as a second language programs are ineligible, regardless of their duration of study. Thirdly, students taking only general interest courses cannot work off-campus.

Fourthly, those whose coursework is solely to qualify for entry into a full-time program are also ineligible. Lastly, students who experience changes in their circumstances that affect their eligibility to work off-campus lose that right.

Students wishing to work while studying must apply for a dedicated work permit. Additionally, they may participate in student work placements or work on campus, subject to separate eligibility conditions.
