Canada Updates Travel Document Requirements for eTA

The Government of Canada has issued a reminder for international travellers regarding the necessary documentation required before boarding flights to Canada when traveling with an Electronic Travel Authorisation (eTA). Travellers must present the same passport that was used during their eTA application.

If a passport expires or is replaced after the eTA is granted, the traveller must obtain a new eTA linked to the new passport. Additionally, travellers are advised to carry their old passport if it contains an expired Canadian visitor visa or a valid United States nonimmigrant visa.

The US visa must have been valid at the time of the eTA application but does not need to remain valid at the time of travel. This guidance aims to prevent boarding denials due to incomplete documentation, as many travellers may not realize that their eTA is specifically tied to their passport number rather than their identity alone.
