Canada Issues Travel Document Guidance for Foreigners

The Canadian government, through Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada, has published official guidance detailing the travel documents required for foreign nationals re-entering Canada after brief trips to the United States or Saint-Pierre-et-Miquelon. The guidance clarifies that foreign nationals already in Canada can return directly from these locations, provided they remain within their authorized period of stay.

However, different rules apply for those who travel to a third country before returning to Canada. If re-entering by air, a valid Electronic Travel Authorisation (eTA) is required, while those returning by car, bus, train, or boat must present a visitor visa.

The Canadian government emphasizes that applying for a full visitor visa is the most flexible option, covering all travel combinations regardless of the mode of entry. This guidance is particularly relevant for travelers from countries whose citizens need either an eTA or a visa to enter Canada, as it addresses potential re-entry complications.
