Diaspora Group Condemns Atiku Over Anti-Tinubu Lobbying

The Nigerians in Monitoring Group (NDMG) USA Chapter condemned former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar for what they termed a coordinated lobbying effort in Washington aimed at discrediting President Bola Tinubu ahead of the 2027 general elections. In an e-statement issued on Sunday, September 6, 2026, NDMG President Daniel Cosmas expressed that Atiku and his associates were turning domestic political rivalry into an international embarrassment for Nigeria.

The group criticized the documents circulated by Atiku's camp, which referenced a 1993 U.S. civil forfeiture case, asserting they had no relevance to any criminal prosecution or conviction of Tinubu. NDMG also expressed concerns about the lobbyist involved, who has faced public scrutiny regarding his character and is of Nigerian origin.

While acknowledging Atiku's right to oppose Tinubu, the group urged a distinction between legitimate political opposition and seeking foreign intervention, warning that such actions could reinforce negative perceptions of Nigeria abroad.
