Canada Returnee Sentenced to 11 Years for Cannabis Import

Abimbola Daniel, a returnee from Canada, was sentenced to 11 years’ imprisonment by Justice Akintayo Aluko at the Federal High Court in Lagos for unlawfully importing and possessing 2.5kg of cannabis. The charges, marked FHC/LAG/CR/609/2026, were filed by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) and included unlawful importation and possession of cannabis.

The prosecutor, Arit Okon, stated that Daniel imported the drug from Canada on an Ethiopian Airlines flight, concealing it in cargo with waybill number 07161185795. He was arrested while attempting to collect the consignment upon its arrival in Nigeria.

Daniel pleaded guilty to the charges, which violated Sections 11(2) and 20(1) of the NDLEA Act. Justice Aluko sentenced him to five years for the first count and six years for the second count, with options for fines of N500,000 and N600,000, respectively.

The offences occurred on July 14 and 15, 2026, at Murtala Muhammed International Airport and Afriway Cargo and Logistics in Lagos.
