Canada Shortens Study Permit Validity for Students

Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada has updated its study permit policy, now granting international students taking prerequisite courses a validity period of 90 days beyond the duration of their preparatory programs. This change requires students to apply for a new study permit to enroll in their main academic programs, which must be submitted while they are still in Canada.

Previously, international students completing prerequisite courses, such as English language training or bridging programs, received permits valid for the duration of their preparatory courses plus an additional 12-month buffer period. The new guidelines clarify that students must obtain a study permit even for prerequisite courses lasting less than six months.

This policy aims to streamline the process for students transitioning to their primary programs in Canada, ensuring they can continue their studies without interruption.
