CAPPA Backs NAFDAC's Sodium Reduction Regulations

The Corporate Accountability and Public Participation Africa (CAPPA) has expressed its support for the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) in its ongoing development of regulations aimed at reducing sodium levels in pre-packaged foods. Akinbod Oluwafemi, the Executive Director of CAPPA, assured stakeholders of the organization's commitment to advocate for public health.

In a press statement, CAPPA congratulated NAFDAC's Director General, Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, for her successful leadership.

The statement emphasized the need for stringent sodium reduction policies, especially in light of the increasing incidence of non-communicable diseases such as hypertension and cardiovascular diseases linked to high sodium intake. Dr.

Jerom Mafeni, a technical advisor at NAFDAC, highlighted the significant threat posed by these health issues, particularly among the younger population. The Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare is set to launch national sodium reduction guidelines that will establish mandatory sodium limits for processed pre-packaged foods.
