Nigerian Navy's Anti-Piracy Success and Fleet Expansion

Captain Abiodun Folorunsho, who assumed the role of Director of Information for the Nigerian Navy on January 27, 2026, and was appointed on November 4, 2025, emphasized the Navy's critical role in combating piracy and enhancing national security during a courtesy visit with media stakeholders. He noted that the Nigerian Navy has successfully tackled piracy, leading to Nigeria's removal from the International Maritime Bureau's piracy-prone list after five years without incidents.

Folorunsho highlighted the Navy's current fleet of 152 vessels, ranking Nigeria as the 22nd strongest naval force globally and the first in Africa. He also mentioned the upcoming 70th anniversary of the Nigerian Navy, which will include an international fleet review and the 6th Sea Power Africa Symposium.

The Navy has leveraged advanced technologies, such as the Falcon Eye system, to monitor maritime activities and ensure safety in Nigerian waters.
