Cardiff City Loses €122M Case Over Emiliano Sala Tragedy

Cardiff City Football Club lost a €122 million compensation case against Ligue 1 club Nantes concerning the tragic death of Argentine striker Emiliano Sala on January 21, 2019. Sala died when a light aircraft transporting him from Nantes to Cardiff crashed in the English Channel.

Cardiff filed the case in 2023 in a commercial court in Nantes, seeking damages for alleged financial repercussions following Sala's death. The court dismissed Cardiff's claim and instead ordered the club to pay Nantes €300,000 in moral damages.

Cardiff's lawyer, Celine Jone, expressed disappointment, emphasizing the need for transparency and safety in football. Nantes, struggling in Ligue 1, welcomed the ruling, stating they bore no responsibility for the incident.

The court's decision followed a 2022 ruling by the Court of Arbitration for Sport confirming that Sala's transfer to Cardiff was completed before his death. Additionally, FIFA ordered Cardiff to pay Nantes €11 million related to Sala's transfer fee, which totaled €17 million.
