Catastrophic Floods in Nepal and Tibet Claim Over 270 Lives

On August 26, 2026, a glacier collapse in the Himalayan region triggered catastrophic floods, leading to at least 273 fatalities and over 1,300 individuals reported missing in Nepal and Tibet. The floods devastated communities, particularly in Nepal's Nuwakot district, where buildings were submerged in mud.

Rescue teams, including the Nepalese army, have conducted helicopter operations to evacuate over 100 people and transport the injured to Kathmandu for advanced medical care. The Nepal Red Cross Society, led by chairman Bishal Kumar Bhandari, has shifted focus from rescue to large-scale relief operations, with around 1,200 people displaced from three villages.

In Tibet, a mudslide near Gyirong Port caused significant damage, with roads affected and warnings of potential secondary landslides. Chinese Premier Li Qiang arrived in Gyirong to oversee rescue efforts, as authorities reported a barrier lake threatening to overflow.
